Winery

Winery

“Le Strette” is a name that identifies a precise place, a winery excavated in tuff, which melts with its territory and enhances it. The small winery “Le Strette” was founded in Novello in 1997, its name comes from the ancient hamlet in which it is located, in which the original narrow lane passes between some very old houses and leads to an enchanting view over the Langa hills that slope towards the valley, crowned by the Alps, with the vineyards in the foreground.
The owners are Mauro and Savio Daniele. After their studies in oenology and an extended experience as oenologists, their dream has come true: their passion for the vineyards, inherited from their father Giulio and their mother Giuliana, led them to the founding of their own winery, Le Strette, which is family-run, with the help of Gino Lagorio and his family. It is a small winery with a great history. Their production has increased remarkably over the years: from the first 4 thousand bottles in 1997 (Barbera and Dolcetto) to the present yearly production of 18 thousand bottles, obtained from around three and a half hectares of precious vineyards located in the best wine regions of the villages of Novello (Bergera, Pezzole, Pallaretta) and Barolo (Bergeisa). Mauro and Savio adopted a clear business philosophy: to enhance autochthonous vineyards (from the prestigious Nebbiolo to the rarest varieties, such as the Nas-cetta of Novello) to exalt the characteristics of the grapes and the territory. The wine is the final result of this process and the means that express these typical features. The experience that comes from the past combines with the experience in the field, along the way in which tradition meets technology and new knowledge.
The new winery, finished in 2002, is an example of this compromise between tradition and modernity, symbol of a gradual growth, in which Mauro and Savio strongly believe and that has been giving good results in the market as well. Le Strette sells in the USA, Switzerland, Norway, Holland, Belgium, Denmark and Italy, at the service of wine lovers who are looking for a special wine which expresses the Langa region.

The passion of Mauro and Savio has taken shape. Since 1997, step by step. There are two different stages with a common aim: to express the features of the territory through its wine, with a balance between taste and fragrance, to obtain an immediately recognizable wine with a strong identity.
The beginning: 1997-2002. The wine of the Le Strette was produced in the old winery, excavated in tuff, where beautiful arches framed the essence of the Langa. Year after year production increased and four years later the new winery was finished.
The second stage: the 2002 vintage is the first to be processed in the new cellar, which continue to respect the earth. The new winery is integrated and hidden inside the hill, it is formed by four areas dedicated to the main stages of wine-making, from the grapes to the bottle, in a mix of aesthetics and functionality, characterized by the principles of order and cleanliness.
The areas are connected to each other, but are separated to guarantee a prompt and functional processing. The walls are in contact with the tuff of the hill, enabling them to maintain ideal conditions of temperature and humidity.
In the stainless steel tanks of the wine-making area the must ferments and releases into the future wine its typical essence, following natural processes that are carefully monitored and which mirror the natural balance of the vineyard, expressing the best of its potential in the cellar. If Nas-cetta of Novello and Dolcetto wait for the bottling in stainless steel tanks, Barolo and Barbera are aged in wood in a dedicated area with soft lights that protect their maturation. The wine completes the ageing process in the storing area after bottling then, when they are ready for shipment they are labelled. this work is performed manually, following a precise order.

“Our philosophy is to reduce as much as possible any intervention on the vineyards, letting the vine keep its natural balance”. Mauro and Savio express with these words their work in the vineyards. The use of natural products and non-invasive methods enable the right interpretation of the vine, obtain good grapes and, subsequently, an excellent wine. Nature takes its course from the pruning to the ripening: Mauro and Savio control and intervene without interrupting the natural process, but give their support letting it express itself at its best. The vineyards of the winery Le Strette extend over 3.5 hectares in the communes of Novello and Barolo, in selected areas.
Around two hectares of the Nebbiolo vines for Barolo are mostly located in Novello (1.5 ha), on the hills that host the hamlets of Bergera and Pezzole (the Barolo Crü Bergera Pezzole was named after them), and in the area of Pallaretta. The soil is rich in clay and limestone, at over 400 m. a.s.l., with an ideal sun exposure. In Bergera-Pezzole they produce a Barolo with remarkable tannins, spicy notes and complex bouquets. The region of Pallaretta, where clay is predominant, gives a fresher Barolo with more intensive colours, very fascinating.
The vineyard Bergeisa is located in the commune of Barolo, its extension over a half hectare is the perfect size for a second crü: Barolo Bergeisa, which mirrors the characteristics of the Barolo region that gives the most elegant wines. The soil is rich in limestone and rather loose, 280 m. a.s.l., with steep slopes and exceptional exposure are its main characteristics. Le Strette also produces Barbera and Dolcetto, cultivated in Novello in the regions of Bergera and Pezzole. The land gives wines with great balance, full-bodied, fruity and very special spicy notes.
Finally there is the Nas-cëtta, an autochthonous vine from Novello, Savio and Mauro are experts of this wine and contributed to its preservation and promotion.
Le Strette believed in its potential from the beginning and since 1997 they have been investigating its features, presenting this wine at its best and focusing on the vineyard that is considered the oldest one in Novello, on the wonderful hill of Pasinotti. This vineyard, together with the more recent vines located on the hill of Pezzole, delivers the yearly production of Nas-cetta of Novello, a very pleasant and particular white wine that makes unique the area of Novello.
